Cooking with Sugar

From Muffins to cookies and fruity desserts.

Reflective Post

Looking back on my blog I feel proud to call it my own. I have learnt so much in Networked Media Production and love that it is such a hands on, practical unit. When I started this blog I had no idea what to post about. My original idea was about moving out but as I started posting and got settled in to my apartment in Canberra I realised that it was not an ongoing topic for a blog. I decided to change course. I altered my introductory post and added a few things and transformed it into a How To Blog. There are miscellaneous topics but it is mainly recipes for desserts. I have stuck to the original idea about moving in, with a few posts about “How To: Budget as a Uni Student” and “How To: Understand HTML”.

In week 4 and 5 I learnt about the Google Analytics and how we can see who views our blog. After looking at the analytics a few times I was a little disappointed that I had such a small audience. However, after a few weeks of following and being followed I noticed I was getting page views from America! These people were primarily bloggers who also posted about recipes and food.

Another aspect of blogging which was highly effective was using Widgets. I am a minimalist so I did not want to over crowd my page with too much activity. I only stuck to a music player, Share it and Disqus. These three Widgets alone, showed me that people were viewing my blog. I received comments and had my blog shared among social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter.

Overall I enjoyed customizing the standard theme and loved engaging with other bloggers on Tumblr!

My top three posts which I would like to share with you are:

  1. How To: Lemon Meringue Tart
  2. How To: Understand HTML/CSS
  3. How To: Pantry Inprov

Fire Evacuation

This morning at about 3AM we woke up to REALLY LOUD alarms due to a fire evacuation. Half asleep, we put some shoes on and evacuated to the front of our apartment complex. There was only a dozen people out of the 180 or so apartments… So, I’m thinking this happens often. It was confirmed to be a false alarm when the fireys found that someone had set off the fire extinguisher as a ‘joke’. They seemed pretty pissed off, as did everyone else that valued there lives, standing out in the freezing cold!

Mind you, that someone who set off the extinguisher would have had to have a key to get into the apartments… WTF is the point of starting such a commotion?

Little pockets of sweetness. You can make the simplest desserts from strawberries. The two that are always a crowd pleaser are Chocolate Dipped Strawberries and Strawberries’n’Cream. The names say it all, but here are the recipes anyway.
Chocolate Dipped StrawberriesIngredients:
Strawberries
Cooking Chocolate (flavours of your choosing)
Toothpicks
Method:
Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a half-filled saucepan of simmering water, making sure bowl doesn’t touch water (or it will overheat). Stir until melted.
Put one toothpick in the top of each strawberry and dip strawberries in melted chocolate.
Be creative! Drizzle white chocolate over milk/dark chocolate to make patterns or pictures.
Refrigerate until chocolate has set. Serve.
Strawberries’n’CreamIngredients:
Strawberries
Whipped Cream
Method:
Cut top off strawberries. Hollow out.
Fill strawberries with cream
Place tops back over strawberries. Optional. NOTE: you may use any filling of your choosing.
Simple, easy and delicious!
